GOLF The 600 Year Old Game.
In the early 1920's, golf was become very popular in the United States with over 1,000 golf courses. Then came the Great Depression, then World War 1. These global disasters temporarily halted the expansion of golf. However, in the post war years, golf quickly resumed it's popularity and many more course were built. By 1980 over 5,000 were in action and by 2012 there were over 10,000 courses.
As the game of golf became more popular, the players became better at hitting the long range ball. In an effort to keep golf challenging, several restrictions were enacted by the United States Golg Association, (USGA). The first was that the size and weight of the balls was standardized. Next came a limit on the velocity of the ball. The ball, at any time, can not exceed 250 feet per second. Among other restrictions, the size of the head of the golf club is limited and also the spring-like effect of the face of the club.
